A Day Room at Eleven in the Morning

A session at eleven in the morning, in a room rented for the day beside the runways, has its own light and pace. Notes on making it rest.

Most people imagine a hotel session at night. A layover rarely cooperates. Long-haul flights from the west land in the early morning, onward connections leave in the afternoon, and the room in between is a day room, rented from mid-morning until some time after lunch. The session in it happens at an hour when the rest of the world is at work, with daylight at the window and the sound of aircraft every couple of minutes. It can be one of the more restful hours of the trip, but only if the room is arranged for it.

The light

Airport hotel rooms usually have good blackout curtains, because they are built for people sleeping at odd hours. Use them, but not completely. A room in total darkness at eleven in the morning feels strange rather than restful, and it makes the transition back to daylight afterwards harder. Draw the heavy curtains and leave the thin ones, or leave a gap of a hand's width. A bedside lamp turned down low finishes the job. The aim is dusk, not night.

The sound

Aircraft noise is part of the setting, and most rooms near the runways are well insulated against it. What remains is a low rumble at intervals, which tends to fade into the background within ten minutes. Corridor noise is more intrusive at this hour than at night, because housekeeping is working. Hang the do not disturb sign before she arrives, and turn off the phone's notification sounds except for the thread. If you want music, keep it low and without words.

The temperature

Day rooms are often set cool, because they were cleaned an hour ago with the window open or the air conditioning on high. A session asks for a warm room. Turn the thermostat up when you arrive, before the shower, so that it has half an hour to work. A room that feels slightly too warm when you are dressed is about right for lying still under warm hands.

The body at eleven

After a night flight from the west, eleven in the morning in Amsterdam is somewhere between three and six in the morning for the body. That is the hour when it is least interested in being awake. A session at this point is received differently from one in the evening. It can feel deeper and slower, and the temptation to drift into sleep is strong. That is fine, and she will not mind. Some travellers deliberately put a short sleep before the session to take the edge off; the page on jet lag in each direction explains the reasoning.

A longer session suits this hour better than a short one, if the stop allows it. Ninety minutes lets the body stop bracing. Two hours is generous if the afternoon departure is late enough to carry it.

The rented clock

A day room comes with a checkout time, and the checkout time is not flexible in the way a night room's might be. Know it before the session is booked. The session should end at least forty minutes before the room has to be handed back, to leave time for a shower, dressing and packing without watching the door. If the hotel sells an extra hour, it may be worth buying; ask at reception when you check in, not when you are already late. The short-stay room page covers the planning in more detail.

After

The hour after a daytime session is a good one for a walk, even a short one in the grounds of the hotel, or for a proper meal. Daylight on the skin after a session helps the body clock find its place. Then the shuttle, the terminal, security, the gate. Travellers who do this often say the late morning session is the one that makes the onward flight bearable, because it puts a break in what would otherwise be twenty hours of transit without one.

The booking itself

Nothing about the booking changes because it is daytime. Half the fee goes ahead, as on every airport booking, and the rest is paid in the room. The hour and the journey time are agreed before anything is fixed. The therapist profiles show who keeps morning hours, which not every woman on the roster does, and a first message that names two choices will usually find one of them free.
